A document platform with Latin roots and a fintech origin story.
The name comes from the Latin word quaterni, meaning “four at a time” or “in sets of four.” In ancient Rome, a quaternio referred to a gathering of four sheets of parchment, folded and bound together to form a section of a manuscript. These quires were the building blocks of every codex and, eventually, every printed book.
We liked the connection. Quaterio is about assembling content into structured, publication ready documents. The name nods to that centuries old craft while pointing forward to what document creation looks like today: visual, programmable and built for the web.
Quaterio didn't start as its own product. Back in 2024, we were building a fintech platform and kept running into the same problem: generating professional looking documents from dynamic data. Invoices, reports, contracts. The existing tools were either clunky desktop apps or bare bones API wrappers that expected you to write raw HTML and hope for the best.
So we built our own internal tool. A visual editor that could handle multi page layouts, headers and footers, page numbers and dynamic content blocks. It worked so well that the document engine started getting more attention than the fintech product itself.
By early 2025, we made the call to spin it out as a standalone platform. We stripped away the fintech specific pieces, rebuilt the architecture for general use and launched Quaterio as a product in its own right.
Quaterio is a visual document editor and PDF generation platform. You can design pixel perfect documents in the browser, then export them manually or generate them at scale via our REST API. Templates with variable placeholders, multi page pagination, headers and footers, CMYK print ready output, QR codes, barcodes and more.
Think of it as InDesign in the browser, with an API bolted on. Designers get the visual control they expect. Developers get a programmable pipeline they can integrate into any stack. And teams get a shared workspace where both can collaborate without fighting over file formats.
Quaterio is built and maintained by Triple Down AB, a small software company based in Sweden. We're a lean team that values shipping fast, keeping things simple and writing code we're not embarrassed to read six months later.
